Ilya, in this decaying, ruined building, is a reflection of the human soul in the post-Soviet space. In the USSR, people's freedom was delimited; their consciousness was constantly exposed to propaganda, and any dissent was punished. This led to the fact that even when freedom was given, this Ilya, standing in a rotting, ruined building, remains in the mind of every person, in every house, and in every city of our country.
Ilya is that porcelain set — the most expensive thing in your house — but which you never use. Ilya is that tea bag you've brewed ten times already, even though inside your couch your family has a large sum set aside for a "rainy day."
It's your perpetually tormented parents at a job they don't like, not paying attention to you. It's your unfulfilled dreams of a creative profession. Ilya is a collective image of a mentality that has grown from the post-Soviet into the Russian mentality.
The inner life of the average citizen of Russia consists of these little details which I have pointed out. For a long period of time, the consciousness of the Russian man has been deliberately limited, instilled with boundaries and prohibitions in order to manipulate and change as it is convenient.
But why have these habits remained with us?
